Jessica, Jessica, Jessica

Heart operation

I have just spent 3 days in the hospital with our tiny little fighter, Jessica ... she underwent her heart operation and all is well. It was tough, says the cardiac surgeon, but I'm happy with the outcome. Phew!! Sigh.

Ah, to experience both sides is inspiriting. I was her nurse, and yet, so much more .... we slept side by side (or should I say, she slept, I tried) .... I fed her every few hours via the nasogastric tube, bathed her, changed her, readjusted her drip and flushed through her IV antibiotics (shhh! don't tell the real nurses), gave her paracetamol when she was in pain, sang to her, played with her, rocked her. I had intended to catch up on some paperwork....hah! I didn't even manage to catch up on sleep!!

This is truly a life saved .... she arrived on our doorstep, malnourished, weak and certainly dying; at 9 months old and just 3.6 kgs; her parents, young and scared and unable to cope, handed her over to us. What must that feel like; to have to let go of your little girl simply because you don't have the support or finance to save her, to give her what she needs.

Jessica really did defy the odds.....and she now has the opportunity to grow into a big girl! And to be loved on by a very special family.

Wow, how I love my 'job' ..... I could weep.....

Gentle Hands ...... I'm so proud to be a part of you. Charity, I thank you!

A belated update on our young, our old and our new!

Our young: Jessica, our miracle girl, had complete victory over her latest battle ... one I truly didn't think she could possibly overcome. At age 10 months and weighing in at 4.3kg, she now faces cardiac surgery...

Off her oxygen and still smiling
Jessica getting an ECHO to diagnose her heart condition :(

Our old: Lola, our beautiful Lola, prayed for her family to come (not the ones that caused her to be with us) ... and they did just that. She went to their home in the provinces where she found peace and died only a few short days later ... at 98 years of age.

Some candid pictures of Lola by Tracey Heppner taken before she left us... we did not speak the same language, except that of love. It seemed enough ... for both of us.

A voice heard can heal more than words offered ......
.... and touch can always comfort
Time,  just time .... however, long is needed .....
And love....always love...
Fragility in the body, yet strength in the heart.....
Lola, peace be with you........
Touch, time, love...........

Lola, you brought Gentle Hands so much ... your strength of spirit and love of God over all your adversities is a testimony to us all. You reminded me that love needs no words - touch and presence is simply sufficient. I will be always be grateful for your lessons in life.

And our new: Alex ... Sigh ... where do I start.

Given to us by Philippine General Hospital ... 7 years old with leukaemia, a tracheostomy, and paralysed; he cannot feed, move, or talk. And was still being aggressively treated with chemotherapy ... I can only think he was meant for us.

...and now in 'gentle hands'

Oh, this work never ceases to amaze, astound and humble me...
